Today at lunch I was sitting one table over from a French woman who was speaking on her mobile phone in beautifully accented English (seriously....I love the way French accents sound. My alter ego--the one I imagine myself to be whenever I happen to hit a rough patch--TOTALLY wears 20-eye boots and a leather corset and speaks with a French accent), and I couldn't help but overhear her conversation:
"Yes, I canceled my cable account last month, but I saw on my American Express card that you have just charged me for three more months. I would like you to remove the charges, as I should not be paying for an account that I no longer have............Yes, well, you see, I canceled my account last month and you have charged me for the next three months........No, I do not wish to pay you because I canceled my account...............Yes, you charged me for the next three months................No, I no longer have an account.............................I would like the charges removed.................No, I already canceled my account, I don't need to cancel it again............................"
Five minutes go by wherein the French woman is doing a lot of "yes....uh huh"-ing. And then:
"I canceled my account last month, but you have charged me for the next three months. I would like you to remove the charges, as I should not be paying for an account that I no longer have."
A wise man (or woman??)* once defined insanity as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. Sometimes, however, that is also the definition of an expat.
*Both Einstein and Benjamin Franklin have been credited with this quote, as has Rita Mae Brown.

Cable companies are clearly the same everywhere! The same thing happened to me that last time I moved - luckily I had a receipt that said the day I canceled and was able to show them at a Comcast place to get reimbursed... idiots!
